Board approves $166,315 emergency school sprinkler appropriation; superintendent previews FY2025 budget

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors approved Supplemental Appropriation FY2024 #6 on April 11, transferring $166,315 from the general fund to the school fund to cover an emergency fire sprinkler project at Victoria Elementary School and a control‑panel update at Kenbridge Elementary School.
Mrs. Jesscia Nowlin presented the monthly school report and said the final average daily membership (ADM) was 1,497. She told the Board that additional expenses may arise pending the Fire Marshal's inspection of completed work. The Board approved the supplemental appropriation unanimously.
Later in the afternoon, Dr. Stanislas, the school superintendent, gave the school system’s FY2025 budget presentation. She said expenses will increase, federal ESSER funding will decline as grants expire, and the Virginia Department of Education is overhauling accreditation requirements, which could raise costs. Based on a projected ADM of about 1,500, the superintendent said the increase in the local match from the FY2024 amended budget to the FY2025 proposed budget is $1,120,918 while maintaining $100,000 above the minimum Required Local Effort and Required Local Match.
The Board asked Administrator Gee to research how the Department of Education calculated the Required Local Match; the Finance Committee will review budget requests and make recommendations to the full Board.
