LEPC reviews Whitefish Township hazmat response and Waiska River oil sheen

Chippewa County LEPC members reviewed two recent response incidents at their Oct. 22 meeting and discussed improving coordination and training. Members examined a hazardous-waste incident in Whitefish Township and identified steps where response responsibilities could be clarified; the committee proposed a tabletop exercise (TTX) with Cloverland Electric Company and the U.S. Coast Guard to test transfer and spill-response procedures.
The committee also discussed an oil sheen noted in July at a private boat launch on 7 Mile Road along the Waiska River; members reviewed response options and monitoring steps for similar small releases. Brian Lavey of Cloverland Electric requested a TTX exercise, and Ed Miller of the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department discussed a recent brownout at Lake Superior State University and emphasized ongoing ICS training needs.
No enforcement actions or new mutual-aid agreements were adopted at the meeting; members asked staff to pursue coordinated exercises and invited subject-matter presentations from EGLE on PEAS and the Mackinac County spill.
