LEPC to update Tier II plans, forward Big Bear Ice Arena plan to Sault Tribe

The Chippewa County Local Emergency Planning Committee agreed Oct. 22 to move forward on updates to Tier II site emergency plans, including one for the Big Bear Ice Arena and plans addressing large fuel storage and aviation fuel at Sanderson Airport. Greg Postma, Chippewa County EM/911 director, said a copy of the Pullar plan for Big Bear will be forwarded to Nick Gordon, environmental scientist for the Sault Tribe, to assist in preparing a new plan.
Members also noted ongoing progress on site plans for several large fuel storage locations and agreed to begin work on a site plan for aviation fuel at Sanderson Airport. The committee discussed which agencies and tribal partners should be involved in drafting and reviewing those plans.
Nick Gordon said he and Robyn Boushour will be the Sault Tribe points of contact for LEPC-related hazardous-material matters going forward and that the tribe can provide resources—he noted the tribe has CFLex bags available for floating submerged items. The committee did not adopt new formal policy at the meeting; staff were directed to share plans and continue collaborative planning ahead of exercise work and future approvals.
