Committee approves new AI-use policy and updates HIPAA, home-health references for Health Department

The Finance, Claims and Accounts Committee approved three Health Department policy changes on July 15, including a new Artificial Intelligence policy (Policy #1.99.017) intended to require staff to seek approval before using AI tools to create documents or meeting minutes. The committee also approved edits to Policy #1.08.003 to remove home health and hospice references and to consolidate the department’s HIPAA policies into an updated Policy #6.01.001.
Health Officer Karen Senkus told the committee the AI policy aligns with measures other health departments have adopted to guide staff use of AI; commissioners approved the package of policy updates by voice vote after review (motion by Commissioner Damon Lieurance, supported by Commissioner Jim Martin). The minutes do not include the full text of the policies; adoption was approval to move the revised policies into effect as presented.
