The Alpena County Finance Ways & Means Committee adopted Resolution #25-02 on Jan. 14, 2025, to waive collection fees and interest in excess of those charged prior to Feb. 15, 2025, on 2024 property taxes currently being collected for qualifying taxpayers.
Under the resolution, the exemption applies through April 30, 2025, and is limited to qualified senior citizens (age 62 or older), paraplegics, eligible servicemen and eligible veterans, and those who are blind or totally and permanently disabled, provided they filed a Homestead Property Tax Credit before Feb. 15, 2025. County officials said the measure is intended to reduce immediate financial burdens for eligible taxpayers during the current collection cycle.
The motion to adopt the resolution was moved by Commissioner William LaHaie and supported by Commissioner Lucille Bray; the motion carried on a roll call vote in which Commissioners LaHaie, Dan Ludlow, Lucille Bray, Brenda Foumier, Todd Britton and John Kodowski voted AYE. Commissioners Bill Peterson and Travis Konarzewski were recorded as excused.
The resolution was introduced by the chair as Resolution #25-02 and listed as an action item; committee documents describe it as a temporary waiver tied to filing of the Homestead Property Tax Credit. The committee did not amend the resolution during the meeting.
