Animal control reports 188 intakes; shelter flooring flagged for repair

Animal Control Officer Deputy Michelle Reid reported to the Courts & Public Safety Committee on Sept. 15 that the county animal shelter had taken in 188 animals so far this year: 26 cats and 160 dogs. At the time of the update, 13 animals remained in-house, two were in foster care and one was at another shelter.
Deputy Reid said forfeiture hearings are processing more quickly, which has improved the shelter’s ability to accept and release animals into county care. The shelter inspection also identified problems with the facility flooring; County Administrator Jesse Osmer said he will discuss the flooring repair with the Maintenance Superintendent.
The committee moved to receive and file the animal control update and the motion carried. No formal funding action for repairs was recorded at the committee meeting; the administrator indicated he would follow up with maintenance staff about next steps and costs.
