The Alpena County Facilities, Capital & Strategic Planning Committee on Aug. 20 reviewed multiple facilities projects, closed a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) public hearing with no comments and noted plans to join a homelessness coordination meeting in September.
Maintenance Superintendent Nick Akins reported that quotes for generators from Wolverine Power were still outstanding after an anticipated mid-July delivery; staff has followed up with another message. Akins also reported that Summit Fire Protection is scheduled for fire extinguisher, sprinkler-head and alarm-panel maintenance on Sept. 16. Committee members heard that the Health Department dental office will receive new flooring and painting, and that upgrades are planned for the Clerk’s Office, IT and the Howard Male Conference Room; there are plans to seal the Annex parking lot this year.
Nicki Janish, Director of Home Improvement/Public Conservator, said she completed the annual presentation required when closing out the fiscal year for the CDBG emergency repair program and announced the amount available to spend in the upcoming fiscal year via a required newspaper posting. The committee opened the CDBG public hearing at 9:01 a.m.; no public comments were offered and the hearing closed at 9:04 a.m.
Administrator Jesse Osmer reported that a local shelter operator contacted the city and a coordination meeting has been scheduled for Sept. 19 at 9:00 a.m.; county staff will join that meeting and Osmer is holding preparatory meetings to collect information. Fairgrounds Manager Holly Akins and Superintendent Nick Akins reported the recent fair went smoothly, with better coordination than last year; the Fair Board will hold a work bee the following day. Staff also reported that the Fair Board received a grant to replace one section of bleachers before next year and will stain newly installed fencing.
The committee received and filed the recycling and Fairgrounds Manager monthly reports by unanimous motion. The meeting scheduled its next session for Sept. 17, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. and adjourned at 9:27 a.m.
Routine items such as a parks camper sale and Health Department shed cleanup were also reported. The minutes show motions carried for routine approvals but do not include roll-call tallies.
