Park manager reports $30,000 revenue gain; committee told renters will need liability insurance in 2026

Park Manager Jim Spires told the Charlevoix County Parks Committee on Oct. 20 that Whitings Park’s end-of-season revenue increased by $30,000 and that new county insurance requirements for 2026 will require renters to purchase liability insurance even when no alcohol is served.
The change in insurance requirements drew surprise from committee members, who “were not aware of this change,” according to the meeting minutes. Spires said he had requested insurer representation at the meeting but that only “Kevin” was present with the insurance representative.
Spires also reported several operational items: the dock will be pulled Nov. 1, 2025; the winter boat launch will be closed this year while the beach area will remain open; a 40-foot-by-8-foot storage container has been requested to be placed by the office; and a recently ordered leaf vacuum has arrived. Those details were presented as part of the Park Manager’s end-of-season report.
Committee business at the Oct. 20 meeting was routine otherwise: the agenda and the Aug. 18 minutes were approved by unanimous voice vote. The committee adjourned at 5:23 p.m.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the insurance policy change at the meeting; committee members noted the insurer’s new requirement and requested further clarification from the county insurance provider.
