Benzie County approves salary changes and multiple budget amendments

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 28 approved several personnel and budget actions, including salary increases for county officials, two budget amendments, payment of bills, and multiple administrative approvals.
By motion of Commissioner Nye (seconded by Commissioner Markey), the board increased the County Clerk’s salary to $70,200; the District/Probate Court Administrator to $64,000; the Sheriff to $76,277.94; the Undersheriff to $74,005.51; and the Central Dispatch Director to $64,000, with funds drawn from the General Fund and Central Dispatch Funds and necessary budget adjustments to take effect at the next full pay period. The motion carried on roll call with Commissioners Jeannot, Markey, Nye, Sauer, Trigg and Warsecke voting Aye; Commissioner Roelofs was excused.
The board approved payment of bills dated Jan. 16–23, 2025 totaling $237,275.67 (motion by Warsecke, seconded by Markey). Separately, Commissioner Nye moved (seconded by Markey) to authorize a $51,000 budget adjustment in the 210 Ambulance Fund to cover EMS-related expenses; the motion carried unanimously.
At the Jan. 28 meeting the board also authorized a $10,000 budget amendment for the Land Bank (motion by Warsecke, seconded by Trigg) and approved an amended Advanced Life Support Mutual Aid and Intercept Agreement with Thompsonville for emergency medical services. A proposed $3,000 contribution to the Benzie Human Services Collaborative (motion by Trigg, seconded by Jeannot) failed on a 2–4 vote (Ayes: Markey, Trigg; Nays: Jeannot, Nye, Sauer, Warsecke).
Other administrative actions approved during the meeting included authorization for HVAC and duct cleaning (not to exceed $11,000) and adoption of the amended General Records Retention and Disposal Schedule Policy for county offices. The board also authorized Administration to move forward with preparing an RFP for EMS Station 3 and approved membership for the Regional Materials Management Planning Committee.
The actions taken affect multiple departments and will be reflected in forthcoming budget documents and payroll adjustments.
