Benzie County ratifies tentative agreements with three public-safety units after closed session

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners entered closed session at 10:38 a.m. on Jan. 28 to consult with legal counsel about collective bargaining negotiations under Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL) 15.268(c). The discussion covered tentative agreements with three public-safety bargaining units: Road Deputies Command, Corrections Deputies Command, and Corrections Deputies.
After returning to open session at 11:11 a.m., the board moved to ratify the total tentative agreements reached with the Road Command, Corrections Command, and Corrections Deputies units and authorized the board chair to sign the successor collective bargaining agreements upon approval as to form by the county attorney. The motion to ratify was made by Commissioner Markey and seconded by Commissioner Warsecke; roll call showed Ayes: Jeannot, Markey, Nye, Sauer, Trigg and Warsecke; Commissioner Roelofs was excused.
The closed-session motion to convene was made by Chair Art Jeannot and seconded by Commissioner Markey; the board invited County Administration and the sheriff into the closed session. The ratification motion authorizes staff to finalize successor agreements consistent with the tentative terms previously negotiated and to secure county attorney approval of final contract forms prior to signature by the chair.
The board did not release the text of the tentative agreements at the meeting; next steps are final form review by legal counsel and execution of the agreements.
