Staff report progress on generators, barn repairs and planned IT upgrades

Maintenance Superintendent Nick Akins and IT Director Logan Kemp briefed the Facilities, Capital & Strategic Planning Committee on ongoing projects and equipment lifecycle issues.
Akins said the county is waiting on generator quotes and has addressed a tripping hazard at the cattle and horse barns raised by the Fair Board. He also said he will order updated health and safety signs for the fairgrounds before fair week. Akins reported the A/C in the MDOT building is not working properly; the unit is 26 years old and the county contacted Spicer Group and Control Solutions to assess the flaw.
Kemp said cameras are scheduled for installation July 28–30 and the committee discussed placing a camera at the fairgrounds to monitor restroom entries. He reported the new recycling building will use a web-managed door-code system and the county could adopt a similar system if suitable. Kemp also noted the county’s two uninterruptible power supplies — one in the courthouse data center and one in dispatch — are 20–25 years old; individual replacement batteries cost about $500 each while whole units run roughly $30,000–$40,000. He said the county is considering a small backup generator to protect the data center during outages longer than 30 minutes.
Committee members asked staff to continue obtaining quotes and return with cost and timeline details as projects move forward.
