Emergency Management and E/911 Director Kim Elkie briefed the Alpena County Courts & Public Safety Committee on May operations, reporting 4,133 total calls and 13 incoming texts for the month.
Elkie said the average time to answer across all call categories was 2.17 seconds and the 911-only average was 2.15 seconds. The average call length for all call types was 1 minute and 25 seconds, with the longest call in May lasting 28 minutes and 35 seconds.
Elkie told commissioners the department is scheduling interviews to fill a dispatcher position that will open due to an upcoming retirement. She said staff are continuing to work with the State of Michigan on details of a grant for backup generators and that routine reporting of services and dispatch times — submitted every few years — was used in calculations that can affect homeowners’ insurance rates; this year’s numbers “looked good,” according to the minutes.
The director also said planners discussed creating Citizen Emergency Preparedness Trainings and are working on topics and speakers. The minutes note Representative Cavitt invited emergency managers from counties affected by a recent ice storm to Lansing.
Commissioner Bill LaHaie moved and Commissioner Dan Ludlow supported a motion to receive and file the E/911 update; the committee voted to receive and file the report.
