Alpena County committee reviews aging generators, duct cleaning quotes and park equipment

The Alpena County Facilities, Capital & Strategic Planning Committee on June 18 heard a series of facility and maintenance updates and approved steps to clear and repurpose county property.
Maintenance Superintendent Nick Akins told the committee that a maintenance contract for the county generators is now signed and that load tests will be run on the courthouse and 911 building generators, both of which are 24 years old. "The generators at the courthouse and 911 building are 24 years old and will have load tests performed to see how much each will put out before failing," Akins said, and Wolverine will provide replacement quotes, including one to add a generator at the Annex building.
Akins also reported two bids for duct cleaning at the courthouse: Sani-Vac Services at $16,500 and ServiceMaster at $14,500, noting that ServiceMaster would provide interior photos of the duct work. He said the county has ordered the correct AED units for parks and that replacement batteries cost about $500 each; batteries stored outdoors in winter can see shortened life. The committee was told the pool shutdown is complete, a double door for the pool area has been ordered with a six- to eight-week lead time, and a lift will be needed to service overhead lighting.
On parks operations, Akins said the Parks trailer has been serviced though its tires show dry rot; a large pile of mulch produced at the debris collection site was judged too coarse for playgrounds but suitable for park paths. A truck used at Sunken Lake Park will be added to the fairgrounds' weekly maintenance checklist, and crews will return to Long Lake Park to reinstall a plow. Photos of the Long Lake Park water tower showed cuts or damage; the committee heard the tower will be repaired and protected with bollards to prevent further damage.
The updates were provided as informational items; where motions were required later in the meeting the committee voted to proceed with cleanup and relocation work outlined by Akins and commissioners.
The committee set no new deadlines for most repairs; several items will be listed for follow-up at the full board or scheduled for work orders.
