Dubois County moves ahead on highway equipment, bridge inspections and paving awards

The Dubois County Highway Department reported several project approvals and procurement actions at the May 6 commissioners meeting.
Highway Superintendent Steven L. Berg said many county right-of-way areas contain buried fiber at varying depths and recommended purchasing a hydro‑excavator to avoid utility damage during excavation; the purchase (listed at $83,500) received a motion of support, contingent on County Council funding, and the motion carried unanimously. Berg also requested and received approval for an additional appropriation reimbursement of $1,045 (to cover travel expenses reimbursing Brent Wendholt for a conference) pending County Council approval, and a transfer of $6,000 from Geotextile to Signs in the Highway Restricted Fund was approved.
Highway Engineer Brent Wendholt presented a professional services agreement with StructurePoint, Inc. for more in‑depth bridge deck inspections covering 15 bridges at an hourly rate not to exceed $15,000; the commission approved the agreement unanimously. Aluminum box culvert quotes for CR 1025 South were presented from four vendors; following discussion the commissioners tabled the request for further review.
Bids for three paving projects (24‑02, 24‑03 and 24‑04) were opened at the advertised 9:00 a.m. time and taken under advisement. Wendholt recommended awarding the projects later in the meeting: 24‑02 (700 North & 200 West) to CalCar Paving ($299,280.60), 24‑03 (600 West) to C&R Construction ($293,336.70) and 24‑04 (15th Street & Meridian Road) to CalCar Paving ($142,082.30); commissioners approved the recommendations unanimously.
Highway Superintendent Steve Berg also announced his intent to retire effective December 31, 2024; interviews of interested internal candidates will be scheduled within the next month.
