Great Start Collaborative reports 24 childcare openings expected by end of 2024

Abbey Carlson told the Houghton County Board on Sept. 10 that the Great Start Collaborative has recruited five participating daycare providers and that four sites are close to opening in South Range, Ripley, Dollar Bay and Laurium. Carlson said the collaborative expects to have 24 childcare openings by the end of 2024.
Iola Brubaker described a partnership with KEDA that helped a provider obtain a grant and said she will provide the number of residents needing childcare at the next county meeting. The update was presented as an ARPA-funded initiative to expand local childcare capacity and to connect employers with training and support for new providers.
Commissioners did not take separate formal action on the childcare update but heard the status report and expected a follow-up with additional enrollment and demand figures at a future meeting.
