Committee approves bill to simplify out-of-state executor vehicle title transfers

The Senate Public Safety Committee unanimously approved House Bill 1181, a measure intended to eliminate an extra titling step for Georgia residents who inherit vehicles when an out-of-state executor handles the estate.
Representative Bowerd said current Georgia practice can force residents to have a vehicle titled in the executor's state and then re-title it in Georgia, incurring additional taxes and administrative expense. "So what I would like to do is, get rid of that middle step where you have to have that car titled and pay the taxes in that third state where the car will never ever be, and just take it straight, to Georgia," he said, noting the bill passed the House unanimously.
Committee members supported the red-tape rollback as a compassionate simplification during probate and estate administration. Senator McNeil was named to carry the bill on the Senate floor. The committee voted to pass the measure by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
If enacted, the change would reduce paperwork and out-of-state transfer costs for families administering estates when executors live in other states.
