Houghton County adopts collective bargaining agreement with courthouse employees

The motion to adopt the resolution was made by Commissioner Joel Keranen and seconded by Commissioner Gretchen Janssen; the roll call vote was Yes: Keranen, Janssen, Tikkanen, Anderson (4); Absent: Britz (1).
Commissioner Glenn Anderson discussed contract provisions noted by the board, including a 5% pension increase and a 1% cash lump-sum payment to two employees. Administrator Rheault told the board there are "about 10 Union employees." Board members also discussed a pending county wage study; the board recorded that if the wage study is not completed by Jan. 31, 2025, the same wage increase scheduled for 2025 would instead be applied in 2026.
The written resolution authorizes the board chairperson to take necessary administrative actions to implement the tentative agreement. According to the certified minutes, the resolution was placed on file with the county clerk; County Clerk Jennifer Kelly certified the resolution on Jan. 30, 2025.
The agreement affects roughly the county's courthouse employees represented by AFSCME Local #226.02 and will take effect under the dates specified in the resolution. The board did not record any public comment on the item during the special meeting.
The board moved to the next agenda items after adopting the resolution.
