Grant County Planning & Zoning Board approves multiple building permits, backs Schatz Third Subdivision

The Grant County Planning & Zoning Board approved a series of building permits and verified a unanimous recommendation for the Schatz Third Subdivision at its regular meeting on Sept. 11, 2025.
Robert Ternes, chairman of the Grant County Planning & Zoning Board, called the meeting to order at 9 a.m. MDT. Jason Albert, Grant County planning and zoning director, told the board that its recommendation in favor of the Schatz Third Subdivision was unanimous and that there had been no opposition reported.
The board approved several building permits by voice vote. Matt Hager, a board member, moved to approve permit BLD-2025-021 for Lynda McClung (IIG LLC) for a new equipment compound after the applicant removed a variance request; Bob Larson seconded and the motion carried. Brendan Becher moved approval of BLD-2025-029 for Michael Knutson’s new garage, seconded by Vernon Straub; that motion carried.
The board took no action on permit BLD-2025-030 for Glenn Johnston after finding the completed pole barn was within the city limits of Leith and therefore outside the county’s permitting jurisdiction, as reported by Director Albert. The board similarly did not act on BLD-2025-032 for Glenn Seidler, a proposed 48-by-175-foot pole barn, after noting that Article II, Section 2.3 of the Grant County Zoning Ordinances exempts agricultural buildings from permitting requirements.
Other approvals included BLD-2025-031 (Kingdom Investors) for a new underground storm shelter, moved by Matt Hager and seconded by Barb Kraft; BLD-2025-033 (Jenelle Humphrey, AT&T) to upgrade equipment on an existing cell-phone tower, moved by Hager and seconded by Larson; and BLD-2025-034 (Mark Stelter) for a 12-by-18-foot concrete pad, moved by Hager and seconded by Larson. Later in the meeting, the board approved BLD-2025-035 (Steven Carter) for a 10-by-20-foot wooden shed, BLD-2025-036 (Ben and Krystle Hillius) for a 72-by-80-foot wooden barn, and BLD-2025-037 (Gene Kautzman) for a 20-by-28-foot garage; those motions were made and seconded by the board members listed in the minutes and carried.
The meeting minutes record no roll-call vote tallies; approvals are described as motions carried or unanimous recommendations. The board set its next regular meeting for Oct. 9, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. MDT and adjourned at 9:39 a.m.
