Grant County Commissioners on Nov. 5 convened an omitted-property hearing and moved to add several properties to the 2025 assessment and tax list, approving two rural residence exemptions and assigning residential values to other parcels.
Jacqueline Steinmetz, Grant County Director of Tax Equalization, opened the hearing and told the board that six properties had been submitted for addition as omitted property. She said two owners provided applications and supporting documentation qualifying them for the rural residence exemption. "We sent an initial application packet, a second letter on June 18 and a final letter on Sept. 25; Notices of Hearing and Increase in Real Estate Assessment were mailed Oct. 10," Steinmetz said, summarizing outreach to nonresponding rural residents.
The board accepted the exemption application for Parcel 11520700 (motion by Commissioner Marty Meyer; seconded by Commissioner Al Roy Hochhalter) and applied the rural residence exemption for the 2025 assessment and tax year (roll-call: Meyer aye, Hochhalter aye, Chairman Alton Zenker aye). The board repeated that motion for Parcel 11523500 and carried it by the same voting pattern.
Commissioners also approved adding residential values for several other parcels after motions and roll-call votes. The board added a residential value of $34,900 to Parcel 34202800 (motion by Hochhalter), $71,500 to Parcel 35192600, $49,200 to Parcel 31252700, and $213,200 to Parcel 12535000; all motions passed with commissioners voting aye.
Steinmetz told the board she had found multiple properties that were improved but had no building permits on file with Grant County; she presented an appeal from the State Board of Equalization for the board's consideration. The minutes record Steinmetz asking for temporary help in her office through the end of 2025 to process the work. Commissioner Meyer said he opposed hiring a temporary employee; Commissioner Hochhalter said he had reservations about training someone so late in the year. The minutes state that Chairman Zenker "did approve" the temporary help; the record does not show a formal motion or roll-call vote on that hiring.
The omitted-property hearing closed at 10:29 a.m., and the board reconvened its regular session to continue other business. The hearing actions alter the county's 2025 assessment roll and will affect the listed parcels' taxable values for the year.
