Morton County adopts $34.9 million 2025 budget and sets $14,056,624 tax levy

Morton County commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 24 to adopt a $34,917,727 county budget for 2025 and to set a 2024 tax levy of $14,056,624 during their regular meeting at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan.
The action followed a brief public hearing on the budget that Chair Nathan Boehm opened at 6:01 p.m. Resident Robert Fode asked a question about his estimated statement; Boehm closed the hearing at 6:08 p.m. Commissioners then approved the budget and levy on a motion from Commissioner Morrell seconded by Commissioner Buckley.
The meeting also cleared routine business: the commission approved the agenda as amended, the minutes of the Sept. 12 meeting and the county’s bills. The county reported total fund expenditures of $1,919,797.22 for the period Sept. 13–24, 2024; a detailed list of checks is available for public inspection at the Morton County Auditor’s Office during regular business hours.
The commission approved a string of tax abatements, including files numbered 6626–6628, 6629–6630, 6632–6634, 6635–6636, 6637 and 6638 in motions moved and seconded by various commissioners. An initial motion to approve abatement #6631 (moved by Commissioner Morrell and seconded by Commissioner Leingang) failed on a roll-call vote: Leingang voted yes; Morrell, Buckley, Zachmeier and Boehm voted no. The commission then voted to deny abatement #6631 on a subsequent motion by Morrell, seconded by Zachmeier; that denial carried on a roll-call vote with all commissioners voting aye.
Commissioner Buckley moved and Chair Boehm seconded a Resolution of Necessity for the Mantahni Subdivision (Project 2490), stating that more than 60% of property owners had signed the petitions under North Dakota Century Code (NDCC) 11-11-55.1. The resolution passed. As required by NDCC 40-22-17, the commission scheduled the public hearing on the project for Nov. 14, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.
The meeting adjourned at 6:16 p.m.
