Morton County forms War Dead Monument Committee, authorizes architects to draft design and cost estimates

Mandan, N.D. — Morton County commissioners voted Dec. 12 to create a War Dead Monument Committee charged with developing a final design, fundraising plan and construction recommendations for a renewed county monument honoring war dead.
Commissioner Morrell moved to create the committee and Commissioner Buckley seconded; the motion carried with all voting aye. Appointed members are Todd Porter (Mandan), Scott Stevens (Mandan), Larry Mclellan (Mandan), Nicole Bickford Frohlich (Mandan), Glen Reed (Mandan), Gary Goroski (Mandan), Stacy Bendish (Mandan), Commissioner Morrell and Commissioner Zachmeier.
The commission enumerated the committee’s responsibilities: work with the architect to produce a suggested final design and a detailed architect’s cost estimate for presentation to the commission; develop a fundraising strategy based on that estimate; pending final commission authorization, execute fundraising measures and solicit construction bids; work with the selected architect during construction; and coordinate a final dedication ceremony.
The commission also authorized the committee to work with Al Fitterer Architect and AGL Architects to move forward on a proposed final design and return recommendations and cost estimates to the commission for consideration prior to any contract award or construction. The minutes record that the committee is to present the final design and cost estimate to the commission for final consideration before any execution.
Next steps: the committee will work with the named architects to refine design details and produce cost estimates for a future commission vote. The meeting adjourned at 6:55 PM.
