Morton County commissioners approve multiple property abatements, appointments and year-end purchases

At a Dec. 26, 2024 meeting in Mandan, the Morton County Commission approved a slate of property tax abatements (and denied several), appointed members to local boards, authorized end-of-year highway equipment purchases and approved liquor license renewals; total expenditures reported were $830,036.44.
The Morton County Commission met Dec. 26, 2024 at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan and approved a series of routine but consequential actions including property tax abatements, board appointments and authorization for highway department equipment purchases.
The commission approved abatements #6641 and #6642 and denied abatements #6643, #6644, #6646 and #6647 after finding petitioners failed to appeal to the Flasher Board of Equalization during the year of the assessments. Commissioners also approved abatements #6645, #6648, #6652, #6655, #6656, #6657, #6658, #6660, #6661, #6662 and #6663. Commissioner Tokach was recused from voting on abatement #6656 due to a stated conflict of interest; after the recusal, the remaining commissioners approved #6656 by roll call.
The commission filled several local board seats. Kevin Schmidt was appointed to the Morton County Weed Board District No. 6 (Ft. Rice) for a four-year term expiring Aug. 1, 2028. The commission appointed Todd Norton and Bruce Engelhardt to the Morton County Water Resource District for three-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2027, and named Ellen Huber as the City of Mandan planning and zoning extraterritorial representative for a five-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2029. Shila Blend was appointed to the Western Plains Public Health board for a five-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2029. The commission also appointed Steve Maershbecker and Carley Retterrath to the Morton County Housing Authority for five-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2029.
On procurement, the commission authorized the Morton County Highway Department to make the presented end-of-year equipment purchases. The meeting also approved 2025 liquor license renewals for The Wet Spot Bar & Grill LLC and Dakota Leathernecks Detachment No. 1419 of the Marine Corps League.
Auditor Dawn R. Rhone reported that total county funds expended from Dec. 13 through Dec. 26, 2024, equaled $830,036.44; a detailed list of expenditures is available for public inspection at the Morton County Auditor’s Office during regular business hours. The commission adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
