Sumter County has been awarded a $311,000 opioid-response grant, County Administrator Gary Mixon reported Tuesday. The funding will primarily support the county detention center by adding counselors and career specialists, expand Narcan distribution in the community, purchase EMS supplies tied to opioid response, and assist with coroner autopsies and related reporting.
Mixon said the county submitted the application and the grant award is intended to increase treatment and response capacity tied to opioid incidents. The grant will also support training and nonclinical resources as described in the county’s submission; Mixon said staff will provide implementation details and next steps to council as programs are developed.
Council did not take an immediate funding vote at the meeting; administration will return with implementation plans and any budget adjustments required to accept and deploy the grant funds.
