Sumter County Council approves rezoning requests, zoning updates and water easement; votes summarized
Summary
At its July 23 meeting Sumter County Council unanimously approved three rezoning requests, adopted zoning ordinance corrections (OA-24-04) on third reading, and cleared a water utility easement (Ordinance 24-1008). Council also gave first reading to a separate rules ordinance (24-1009) on a 5–2 vote.
Sumter County Council on July 23 approved multiple land-use actions and an ordinance amendment affecting the county’s zoning code.
The council unanimously granted second reading to three rezoning requests: RZ-24-09 (a roughly 0.98-acre portion of 1290 Peach Orchard Road to General Commercial), RZ-24-10 (a 1.05-acre parcel at 585 N. Kings Highway to Agricultural Conservation to allow a manufactured home), and RZ-24-12 (a roughly 31.76-acre parcel at 3200 Byrd Street to Agricultural Conservation). Each request was presented by Planning Director Helen Roodman; no public speakers testified for any of the rezoning items and council members voted without recorded opposition.
Also on the consent-style portion of the agenda, the council adopted OA-24-04 on third reading, an amendment that updates multiple articles of the Sumter County Zoning & Development Standards Ordinance to correct and clarify conditional-use and Agricultural Conservation district requirements. Planning staff told council there were no changes to the ordinance since second reading, and the motion to adopt carried unanimously.
Following an earlier public hearing, the council also granted second-reading approval to Ordinance 24-1008, an ordinance authorizing a water utility easement adjacent to Broad Street intended to allow the city to extend water lines to Veterans Park; that vote was unanimous.
