Sumter County delays Pinewood Road rezoning after multiple neighbors object

Planning Director Helen Roodman presented the request to rezone about 9.11 acres from Conservation Preservation to Agricultural Conservation so the owner could place a double-wide mobile home on the property. Multiple neighbors spoke during the public hearing, expressing concerns about lack of fences, dogs and four-wheelers. Janet Golden, Lawrence Golden and Gabriel Harrison opposed the rezoning, saying it could lead to more mobile homes and a loss of long-held family land.
Property co-owner Robert Haslem spoke to clarify that he has kept his dogs inside and directed his grandchildren to ride four-wheelers away from neighbors. "I do not want a trailer park, I want a home for myself, my son, and my daughter," Haslem said, according to the minutes.
After council discussion about property layout, permitted uses and the Military Protection Planning Area designation, Councilman Charles T. Edens moved and Councilman Carlton B. Washington seconded a motion to defer second reading to the next meeting to allow additional discussion. The motion carried unanimously.
