Sumter County Council voted on Oct. 22 to rezone roughly 41.7 acres at 1080 W. Brewington Road from Agricultural Conservation to Heavy Industrial, clearing the way for a proposed metals manufacturing use.
Planning Director Helen Roodman described the request as necessary to accommodate an intended metals manufacturing facility (NAICS 332312) and noted the site is in a Priority Economic Development Planning Area. "Rezoning the property from AC to HI is reasonable and in general alignment with the Comprehensive Plan," Roodman told council.
During the public hearing, local realtor and business owner Mack Kolb spoke in favor, saying the developer hopes to build a "60,000 square foot facility at a cost of approximately $12 to $15,000,000." Kolb also stated the project "will add approximately forty to forty-five more jobs which will equal to approximately 145 people employed by this company." No speakers opposed the request during the public hearing recorded in the minutes.
Councilman Charles T. Edens moved and Vice Chairman James R. Byrd, Jr. seconded a motion to grant second-reading approval; the motion carried unanimously. The minutes indicate the rezoning was recommended by the Planning Commission and is intended to facilitate future development for an unspecified industrial end user.
Next steps: With second reading granted, the item proceeds per local procedures for implementation and permitting; the transcript does not list a specific company commitment or a final development timetable.
