Ware County commissioners approve weight-limit ordinance, add Veterans Day and authorize leases, grants and licenses

The Ware County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 13 approved a package of ordinances, resolutions and licenses, including a weight-limit ordinance for Winn Clay Drive, adding Veterans Day to the county holiday schedule, one-year radio tower leases for county departments, a regional rural transit grant application and a Roth option for the county's deferred compensation plan.
The actions were taken during a regular meeting in Waycross attended by Chairman Elmer Thrift and Commissioners Barry Cox, Leonard Burse and Jon Tindall (Commissioner Timmy Lucas was absent). The board approved Ordinance 2025-03 establishing a weight limit on Winn Clay Drive and adding a four-way stop at Stetson Drive and Mesa Drive; Commissioner Jon Tindall made the motion and Commissioner Leonard Burse seconded the motion.
Commissioners also voted to add Veterans' Day to Ware County's list of approved holidays after Commissioner Burse moved the change and Commissioner Cox seconded. The board approved one-year radio tower lease rates for county departments (Emergency Management Agency $255 per month; Public Works $125 per month; EMS $130 per month; Fire Rescue $230 per month; Ware County Sheriff's Office $130 per month) on a motion from Commissioner Barry Cox.
On finance and personnel items, the board approved Resolution 2025-20 authorizing filing of a regional rural public transit grant; Commissioner Jon Tindall noted the grant has been used for several years and carries no cost to the county. The board also approved Resolution 2025-21 to amend the ACCG 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan to add a Roth (post-tax) contribution option for employees.
The board approved three alcohol license requests — for 2501 Plant Avenue, 1900 Alma Highway and 1902 Alma Highway — with commissioners noting two of the approvals involved changes of ownership for stores that already held licenses. Commissioners approved a borrow pit agreement with Mark Beeson, and several other routine items were handled by roll call votes.
