Two road-abandonment requests in Ware County move to regular agenda after public concerns

Two separate requests to close unopened roads in Ware County were presented at a public hearing Aug. 11 and were added to the Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting agenda for later action.
Interim Planning Director Dustin Minchew described the first request as a petition from applicant Dale Poole to close and obtain an unopened 50-by-500-foot section of Lacie Street in the Deenwood Subdivision so he can construct a house within the existing right-of-way. The chairman asked whether anyone opposed or supported the request; no one spoke. The item was added to the regular meeting agenda.
The second request involves an unnamed, unopened road in Block A of Sand Hill Subdivision. Minchew said applicant Kody Dukes asked to close the road to add it to his existing property; the road ends in a cul-de-sac on his land and touches no other landowner’s property. Parker James Sullivan of 5773 Sand Hill Rd. spoke in opposition, saying he does not want a trailer park put on the property and that he has heard such a use may occur.
County Manager James Shubert responded that a mobile-home park under county rules would require county water and sewer (which he said are not available at that location) and one-acre lots per mobile home. He added that converting the site to an RV park would require a permit review first by the planning commission and then by the Board of Commissioners. Minchew and staff emphasized that the purpose of the hearing was to consider only whether to close the road; if closed, a quitclaim deed would be issued and the property placed on the tax rolls.
After public comment, Commissioner Jon Tindall moved to close the public hearing; Commissioner Timmy Lucas seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The public hearing closed at 6:15 p.m.; both road-closure requests were added to the regular meeting agenda for consideration at a later date.
