Ware County to seek bids for SPLOST-funded recreation and public works equipment

At the July 14 work session the Ware County Board of Commissioners reviewed two SPLOST purchase requests covering Recreation and Public Works equipment and authorized staff to pursue bids and return with costs for formal action.
Recreation Director Lance Adamson presented a request to spend $106,505.64 from 2014 and 2022 SPLOST funds on two 72-inch Toro mowers ($33,527.82), one Toro Sand Pro 3040 field groomer ($34,395.94), a football scoreboard ($13,115) and repairs to field lights ($25,779.88). Adamson told the commission that adding a side-by-side work buggy would increase the total to about $140,000. County Manager James Shubert said not all items discussed at the budget retreat were included to preserve SPLOST reserves for ongoing AC issues.
Public Works Director Larry Thrift requested permission to seek bids for equipment including two 60-HP tractors (he will check on an 80-HP alternative), two Kenworth 480 dump trucks with 16-foot bodies, a 50,000-lb excavator with thumb control, an 8-foot tiller, and lease-or-purchase options for two motor graders. County Manager Shubert explained lease options (approximately $5,000/month per grader) versus replacement at 12,000 hours and asked staff to solicit bids; Commissioner Barry Cox directed staff to return with bids. Both purchase requests were added to the regular meeting agenda for formal consideration.
