Hayes told the Commission he preferred to hold the event in Waycross rather than at an airport in Adel because he wants to "bring the money to Waycross," saying hotels and restaurants would benefit as attendance grows over time. County Manager James Shubert and the airport manager reported they had been advised by the FAA and GDOT that the airport cannot be closed; the airport would issue a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) but would not close operations. Assistant County Attorney Jennifer Herzog asked that Mr. Nelson or Eric Johnson email detailed event information to the airport manager so staff could check FAA and Georgia DOT restrictions; staff said they would vet the proposal and bring findings back to the Commission.
No action or vote was taken on the airport event proposal at the June 9 meeting; commissioners requested additional information and regulatory review before considering any approval or contract with the airport.
