Residents press county on revaluation as manager reports storm damage and thanks staff

Jonathan Garvey of 101 E. 12th St. told commissioners he is concerned about GMASS's appraisal services used for the countywide revaluation. Debra Milam of 4420 Frazier Circle asked several questions about how property taxes are calculated and how tax revenues are used. Both comments were recorded in the workshop minutes; no response or decision on those concerns was documented at the workshop.
County Manager Jim Carter described the county's operational response to a recent storm, saying there were "approximately 30 downed trees, several motor vehicle accidents and power outages," and he praised emergency responders and staff working in the emergency operations center and in the field. Commissioners expressed gratitude to staff: Melissa Hughes specifically thanked department heads and Manager Carter for handling storm response and property-tax issues, and Greg Wood requested that generator service records be filed with the county when work is performed. Commissioner Stan Stalnaker referenced an Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) video that explains property-tax processes. Chairman Tony McBrayer welcomed new City of Sylvester City Manager Chris Davis to the meeting.
No formal actions were taken during the workshop on the property-tax questions or the storm report; public comments were recorded for the official record and pending agenda items will be considered at the Aug. 12 regular meeting.
