Tift County places LED streetlight conversion, Head Start lease, two alcohol-license reviews and appointments on Oct. 14 agenda

The Tift County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 8 directed staff to place several items on the Oct. 14 regular meeting agenda, including a Georgia Power offer to convert the county’s street lights to LED at no cost, a one-year lease renewal for a Head Start facility and reviews of two alcohol-license applications.
Public Works Director Jason Jordan told commissioners that Georgia Power has offered to replace the county’s existing street lights with LED fixtures at no charge to the county; the board indicated it wanted the matter brought forward for formal consideration on Oct. 14. County Manager Jim Carter said the lease for the Coastal Plain Area Economic Opportunity Authority Inc. (Head Start) location at 64 Tifton‑Eldorado Road has expired and that the proposed agreement would be for one year with two renewal periods; commissioners agreed to put the lease on the regular agenda.
County Clerk Miriam Jordan summarized two pending alcohol-license applications. An application from Pina Shah for Shree Ji TyTy 1210 LLC at 4831 U.S. Highway 82 W had been tabled at the Sept. 9 meeting pending residency documentation; the clerk said Shah has since provided a lease and a utility bill in her name and was invited to appear at the Oct. 14 meeting to explain residency. A separate application from Deep Patel for Big Red Management LLC at 714 Salem Church Road seeks retail malt beverage and retail wine-package licenses; the sheriff reviewed that application and recommended approval, and the board agreed to place it on the upcoming agenda.
Miriam Jordan also recommended changing November meeting dates because the work session currently falls on Election Day and the regular session on Veterans Day. Staff proposed the work session on Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, and the regular session on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024; the board directed that the calendar change be included on the Oct. 14 agenda.
The board agreed to place an appointment to the Animal Control Board on the Oct. 14 agenda. The clerk said staff recommends appointing Karen Schultz to a vacant seat and naming Josh Rousey as the alternate; those were the only applications on file.
No formal votes on these items were recorded in the Oct. 8 work session; the board’s direction was to include the items on the Oct. 14 regular agenda for formal action.
