Summary
The Tift County Board of Commissioners approved a Georgia Power program to replace county streetlights with LED fixtures at no cost and separately agreed to a $157,783.78 Georgia Power installation for EB Hamilton Park, funded from SPLOST VI, reserves and ARPA.
Tift County commissioners on Oct. 14 voted unanimously to accept Georgia Power’s offer to replace the county’s streetlights with LED fixtures at no cost and to contract with the utility for parking and sidewalk lighting at EB Hamilton Recreation Complex.
Public Works Director Jason Jordan told the board that Georgia Power contacted the county and offered to change out all street lights to LED at no cost to the county. Commissioner Stan Stalnaker moved to approve the countywide LED conversion; Commissioner Donnie Hester seconded the motion, which carried 6-0.
Separately, County Manager Jim Carter said Georgia Power will provide and maintain poles and fixtures for parking and sidewalk lighting tied to the EB Hamilton addition and upgrades. The board approved the EB Hamilton lighting agreement, which carries a contract cost of $157,783.78 to be paid from SPLOST VI, county reserves and ARPA funds. Commissioner Greg Wood moved to approve the EB Hamilton agreement; Commissioner Paul Webb seconded and the vote was 6-0.
Why it matters: countywide LED conversions can reduce energy costs and maintenance; the EB Hamilton installation advances lighting for a recreational facility that the county is expanding. Funding for the EB Hamilton project comes from voter-approved SPLOST revenue, county reserves and federal‑pandemic relief (ARPA), as stated by staff.
What’s next: staff will coordinate with Georgia Power on scheduling and installation. The board’s motions carry no further approval conditions recorded in the minutes.
