Tift County work session discusses potential landfill tipping fee increase after six-year fund balance decline

County Manager Jim Carter told the Board that the county landfill's tipping fee has not changed since Sept. 18, 2018 and that increases in operating costs and capital spending have reduced the Solid Waste Fund balance over the six-year period.
"The tipping fee at the Landfill hasn't changed since September 18, 2018," Carter said, noting staff had received information from the City of Tifton and asking that the Acting City Manager attend a future meeting to explain several items in the city's data.
Why it matters: Changes to tipping fees affect residents, haulers and the landfill fund's sustainability. City–county coordination on pricing and cost-sharing was raised as important to understanding the fund's trajectory.
Details: The Board discussed the need for further explanation from the City of Tifton; Acting City Manager Larry Lawrence was not present for the work session because the city had a concurrent meeting. After discussion the Board directed staff to place the tipping-fee item on the Nov. 12 regular agenda for a fuller discussion.
Next steps: Staff will ask the Acting City Manager to attend the Nov. 12 meeting to address the city's materials and the county will take up whether to adjust the tipping fee.
