Tift County to consider pension amendment aimed at rehiring retirees and retaining staff

County Manager Jim Carter told the Tift County Board of Commissioners at the Dec. 3 work session that a multi-part plan developed earlier in 2024 to recruit and retain employees culminates with a proposed amendment to the county's defined benefit pension plan.
Carter said the amendment is intended to remove any impediment preventing the county from reengaging retirees, provide a mechanism to retain institutional knowledge and keep pace with benefit structures in surrounding jurisdictions. Commissioners indicated they want the proposed amendment on the regular agenda for Dec. 9 for formal consideration.
No vote was taken at the work session; staff will present the full amendment and any necessary implementation language at the regular meeting.
