He said the county must execute and send a letter to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division verifying zoning, confirming compliance with the county's Solid Waste Management Plan and certifying the county's commitment to the statewide waste-reduction goal.
Carter provided the board a copy of the letter and said he would send it to Georgia EPD. The clarification keeps the final decision on whether, and in what form, the landfill will expand with the board at a future meeting, Carter said.
The board took no formal vote or policy action on the expansion during the Dec. 9 meeting; Carter framed the March action as procedural, intended to meet state permitting timelines rather than to adopt a substantive expansion plan. The record shows the board reserved approval of any actual expansion for a later date.
Next steps: the county manager will send the verification letter to Georgia EPD as part of the permitting process. Any formal proposal for expansion and any required approvals will be presented to the board for a future decision.
