Tift County to replace jail radio-tower strobe light; $18,750 LED quote to be covered by insurance and SPLOST VI

The Tift County Board of Commissioners authorized repair of a nonfunctioning strobe light atop the county jail radio tower on Jan. 13, approving an $18,750 replacement quoted by Mobile Communications America.
County Manager Jim Carter told the board that the Federal Aviation Administration had notified the county the tower strobe was not working. Carter said the existing light and wiring date to the 1980s and are obsolete. Mobile Communications America quoted replacing the unit with modern LED lighting at a cost of $18,750. Carter said the county has filed an insurance claim; the county would be responsible for a $5,000 deductible and would use SPLOST VI funds as needed.
Commissioner Greg Wood moved to repair the strobe light with funding coming from insurance proceeds and SPLOST VI; Commissioner Donnie Hester seconded. The motion passed 5-0. The county did not announce an expected timeline for installation during the meeting.
