Polk County reappoints assessor, names elections member; Planning & Zoning slate fails

Commissioner Ray Carter moved to reappoint Derinda Stephens to the Board of Assessors for a four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2025, with the stipulation that Stephens remain a Polk County resident and serve only until a replacement is appointed. Commissioner Jordan Hubbard seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
On the same motion sequence, Carter moved to appoint Jacqueline "Jackie" Tadlock to the Board of Elections, District 2, for a four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2025, to fill the expiring term of Elaine Boring. Commissioner Hubbard seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner Carter then moved to appoint three individuals to the Planning and Zoning Commission—Nick Rainey (District 1), Art Clay (District 2) and Zach Arnold (District 3)—each for three-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2025. Commissioner Linda Liles seconded. The motion failed on a 3–2 split: Commissioners Jordan Hubbard, Gary Martin and Chuck Thaxton voted against; Commissioners Carter and Liles voted in favor. The failure means those seats will remain unfilled until the board either reconsiders nominees or takes other action.
The meeting opened with an amendment to the agenda adding these appointments; that amendment passed earlier in the meeting on a motion by Commissioner Thaxton seconded by Commissioner Carter (Carter, Hubbard, Liles and Thaxton in favor; Martin opposed). The board adjourned by unanimous vote at the end of the session.
