Polk County retires police K-9 Joep; handler to assume care

The Polk County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 3 unanimously approved a request by Police Chief Kiki Evans to retire the department’s K-9, Joep, and place him into the care of his handler, Corporal C.J. Norris. Joep, now eight years old, was described by the chief as no longer performing to the level expected of an active K-9.
Chief Kiki Evans told the board that K-9 teams commonly retire animals at this age and requested the department follow that practice by allowing Norris to adopt Joep. Commissioner Linda Liles moved to approve the retirement and transfer; Commissioner Gary Martin seconded the motion, which passed without opposition.
During commissioner comments after the vote, Commissioner Gary Martin publicly thanked Corporal C.J. Norris for his handling of Joep. The board took no further action related to K-9 policy or funding during the meeting.
The decision was administrative and final at the meeting; no subsequent procedural steps were announced.
