Residents urge action on roadside trash and animal-shelter procedures

During public comment, Thomas Griffin of Farmdale Road presented photographs showing garbage along county roads and at dump sites, saying debris is blowing into the canal on Best Bridge Road and could become a health hazard. Commissioner J.C. Warren said the board is aware and described efforts to find property to fence county dumpsters, though no owner has agreed to sell at this time.
Rebecca (Becca) Hughes of Buttermilk Road, who identified herself as an owner of a dog-training business, urged changes to the Animal Control Shelter’s procedures. She said the county is spending on veterinary testing for animals that are euthanized shortly after, and she called for better advertising to increase adoptions. Hughes submitted a letter outlining her concerns.
Later in the meeting, Commissioner Willis said she had met with surrounding counties and proposed creating an Animal Control advisory board to support a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program, improved adoption advertising, recruitment of a new veterinarian to lower costs and hiring a part-time worker to assist Animal Control Officer Ashley Bazemore. Commissioner Warren said the county should develop clear protocols for shelter visitors.
No formal actions were taken at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to consider the proposals and return with options.
