Screven County commissioners vote down Ag Building roof repairs; library needs assessed

The Screven County Board of Commissioners considered estimates for repairs to the Ag Building and the county library during the Feb. 14 meeting.
Commissioner Allison Willis presented several estimates for the Ag Building roof and noted SPLOST funds had been set aside. Commissioner Ben Thompson said he would prepare a plan and recommended postponing work until after the April Livestock Festival so construction would not interfere with events. Willis moved to proceed with the Ag Building repairs; Commissioner Mike Dixon seconded. The board recorded two votes in favor (Willis and Dixon) and five opposed (Chairman Will Boyd, Commissioner J.C. Warren, Commissioner Rosa Romeo, Commissioner Ben Thompson and Commissioner Edwin Lovett). The motion failed.
Separately, Commissioner Lovett reported recurring leaks at the library. Building & Maintenance Supervisor J.D. Meadows said leaks stem from rain blowing through vents and that some repairs could be handled by on-site maintenance staff; a prior analysis estimated full repairs at $165,185 and noted some cosmetic work could be done locally. Lovett said the library may be eligible for an MRR grant that could offset some costs.
Commissioners asked staff to develop plans and estimates for future consideration rather than proceed immediately.
