Long County commissioners approve Butter Davis Road abandonment, select jail architect and authorize land sale

On Dec. 7 the Long County Board of Commissioners voted to abandon part of Butter Davis Road, name a county jail architect, adopt a district map (one abstention), approve multiple appointments and authorize the sale of parcel L03 019 for commercial use.
The Long County Board of Commissioners met Dec. 7 in Ludowici and approved a series of routine actions, including the abandonment of a portion of Butter Davis Road and the selection of Allstate Construction as the architect for a planned county jail.
Chairman Robert Parker called a public hearing at 9:00 a.m. on the proposed road abandonment and received no verbal or written comments before closing the hearing at 9:05 a.m. Following the hearing, the board voted to approve the abandonment; Commissioner Gerald Blocker made the motion and Commissioner John Reddish seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The board also voted to adopt a legislative district map that had been approved by the state House Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Committee. Commissioner Gerald Blocker moved the adoption, Commissioner John Reddish seconded and Commissioner Florence Baggs abstained; the motion passed 3-1.
On the county’s jail project, Commissioner John Reddish moved to select Allstate Construction as the county jail architect. Commissioner Gerald Blocker seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
The commissioners approved an amendment to the county ordinance addressing post-construction matters and reappointed Mr. Danny Norman to two regional authorities: the Greater Savannah Regional Authority for a four-year term noted in the minutes as July 1, 2020–June 30, 2024, and the Coastal Area District Development Authority for a three-year term. The board also appointed Jason Smiley to the Long County Development Authority.
After entering and exiting an executive session to discuss real estate and personnel, the board voted unanimously to sell parcel L03 019 to an adjacent landowner with the stipulation that the property be used for commercial purposes only. Commissioner John Reddish then moved to adjourn; Commissioner Gerald Blocker seconded and the meeting ended by unanimous vote.
