Ben Hill County Commissioners on July 2 adopted the official millage rate at 16.581% for both unincorporated and incorporated areas, a vote officials described as taking the rollback rather than raising the tax rate.
County Manager Michael Dinnerman presented a five-year millage history and told the board the county was taking the rollback at 16.581 percent. He said there was not a tax rate increase and that growth generated an estimated $188,000 in additional revenue. “There was not a tax increase; but a net increase due to growth for $188,000,” Dinnerman said.
Vice-Chair Hope Harmon moved to adopt the millage at 16.581%; Commissioner John Mooney seconded and the motion passed with Vice-Chair Harmon, Commissioner Mooney, Commissioner Bennie Calloway, and Commissioner Daniel Cowan voting in favor.
The adoption sets the county’s tax rate for the coming year; county staff provided the five-year history at the meeting but did not provide a detailed revenue breakdown in this session. The millage adoption is effective immediately for the 2019 tax year under the county’s procedures.
