Ben Hill County commissioners met June 10, 2020, in a special called teleconference to review employee health insurance renewal options presented by benefits consultants.
Courtney Howell, an employee health insurance benefits consultant, and Noel Williams of Partners Benefit Group presented an Excel spreadsheet comparing the county’s current medical plan with a renewal proposal from Covenant and discussed alternatives including UnitedHealthcare and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. The meeting was convened under emergency teleconference authority.
The minutes state the special meeting was held by telephone conference under OCGA 50-14-1(g) and OCGA 38-3-54 after the World Health Organization, the U.S. president and the governor of Georgia had declared COVID-19 emergencies and the Centers for Disease Control recommended social distancing measures.
Howell gave an overview of the current medical plan and the renewal proposal. "Mr. Howell stated the current Blue Cross Blue Shield dental insurance will increase $5.00 per month and the vision insurance will remain the same," the minutes say. Commissioners asked questions about the alternatives and discussed the options with the consultants.
The minutes do not record any formal motion or vote on a renewal or carrier selection. Chairman Steve Taylor called the meeting to order; the meeting was signed as minutes by Taylor and County Clerk Donna R. Prather and then adjourned.
Next steps, including whether the board will take formal action on a renewal or change carriers, are not specified in the minutes.
