Fayette County accepts $192,000 ARC subgrant to update its transportation plan and adds Helmer Road to draft list

Fayette County commissioners voted unanimously Dec. 12 to accept a $192,000 subgrant from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) to update the county’s 2019 Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP).
Public Works Director Phil Mallon said the list of candidate roads supplied with the grant application was a draft that could be modified during the upcoming scope-of-work and stakeholder engagement; Commissioner Charles D. Rousseau asked specifically whether roads could be added later and Mallon confirmed some additions were possible. Rousseau moved to add Helmer Road to the CTP candidate list; the Board approved the addition 5-0, and then voted to accept the ARC subgrant and authorize staff to proceed with the project and a request-for-proposal process to define the study scope.
Mallon said the next steps are to prepare a request for proposals that would detail the study scope, allow additional roads to be considered, and set public engagement opportunities. Commissioners noted they expected further opportunities for public input before the plan is finalized.
What’s next: Staff will issue an RFP for the CTP update, incorporate public input and finalize a study scope; Helmer Road will be included in that candidate list for evaluation under the grant-funded update.
