Freemansburg council tables June 7 5K, denies metal-detecting request and cites park-safety repairs

Council members on April 1 tabled a request to authorize a 5K walk/run on June 7 organized by Stephanie Velez, which the minutes say would require road closures, additional overtime for Public Works and Police, and a liability waiver. The item was tabled because of parking and public-safety concerns related to ongoing Main Street construction and PennDOT detours; the council authorized the Borough Solicitor to review the waiver, a motion recorded as passing 5-0.

During the courtesy-of-the-floor portion of the meeting, Resident Dale Deitrich asked to paint the curb and the fire hydrant in front of 913 and 915 Lincoln St. to discourage parking at the hydrant; Borough Manager Jonathan Itterly said Public Works would handle the painting. Resident Steve asked why the basketball area and playground were locked; Manager Itterly said the basketball area had been closed for vandalism and trash, and playground repairs were underway after a safety complaint. Stephanie Velez noted that the lock on the fence around the retention pond between the elementary school and the park was missing or broken; Manager Itterly said he would notify Public Works to replace it.

Council also denied a request from Christina Krasnai to conduct metal detecting in the park behind the elementary school; the motion to deny passed 5-0. The minutes do not provide the reason for denial beyond the council vote.

Other parks items noted as informational included a Trail Tender cleanup along the D&L Trail on April 22, 2025, and the Canal's trout season opening on April 5. The minutes do not record a formal appeal or further public testimony on the 5K after the item was tabled.
