Rawlins County discusses landfill water-rights lease and possible land purchase

County landfill and recycling matters were discussed at length during the Nov. 3 Rawlins County commissioners meeting.
Landfill manager Corey Castens and Farmers Bank & Trust trustee Brad Zimmerman told commissioners the trustee board (Loren Erway, Isaac Marintzer and Brad Zimmerman) is willing to work with the county on a water-rights lease for Obert Trust land. Castens suggested the board consider purchasing land north of the landfill to expand operations.
Castens also reported operational issues: the landfill loader needs repair, Cahoj's missed an Oct. 31 deadline on a project and Bernie is no longer with Miller & Associates; Chris Miller will finish the work. Castens said the household hazardous waste (HHW) collection had a strong turnout and that Clean Harbor will pick up the hazardous materials. He also located the DOT inspection showing the trailer is valid through the end of the year.
No formal lease or land-purchase motion was recorded in the minutes; commissioners directed staff and trustees to continue discussions.
