The Rawlins County Board of Commissioners voted Nov. 3 to hire Caleb Kastens as the county’s Noxious Weed Director, replacing Bob Simminger, who is retiring. Commissioner Lincoln Pochop made the motion to hire Kastens effective Jan. 1, 2026; Commissioner Mark Mosley seconded it and the motion carried.
Kastens told the board he plans to “continue doing what Bob Simminger has done,” and that he is not planning to take county health insurance. He said he still needs to complete his 9A pesticide applicator license; the commissioners agreed to cover costs to obtain that certification.
The action follows an interview during the Nov. 3 meeting in which commissioners and the candidate discussed chemical certifications, prairie-dog control, salary and benefits. The board did not specify salary or benefits in the motion. The hiring will take effect Jan. 1, 2026, according to the motion approved by the board.
