Road and Bridge reports equipment failures, considers hire and CDL reimbursement contract

Superintendent Mark Loop reported the 770CH grader did not sell at auction and suggested keeping it and installing a new motor. He said the 140G’s transmission failed and that the machine has roughly 17,000 hours; the board discussed selling the 140G. Loop told commissioners that a Decatur County applicant had applied for a lead-man position in Achilles; if hired, the department would return to full staffing.
Loop also said some employees have expressed interest in county-funded CDL classes. Commissioners and County Attorney Chris Rohr discussed drafting an employment agreement requiring employees who take the CDL class to reimburse $1,500 to the county if they leave within an agreed period; Rohr will draft that contract for later action.
No formal equipment-sale motion was recorded in the minutes; the discussion focused on repair versus sale options and staffing needs. The board directed follow-up and potential job posting to fill vacancies if the Decatur County applicant is not hired.
The board is scheduled to reconvene July 15, 2025, where personnel and equipment decisions could return to the agenda.
