Atwood Township representatives Tyrel Prideaux and Dakota Dunker told the Rawlins County Board of Commissioners on April 1 that the township is being taxed on multiple properties, including the Ol Depot, various buildings, the golf course and a baseball diamond. Prideaux said the township would receive roughly $700 of the taxes assessed and asked, "why is one government entity taxing another government entity?" Commissioners asked Appraiser Alicia Baumfalk to review the records.
Appraiser Alicia Baumfalk said she would review the township's files and recalled that the Board of Tax Appeals (BOTA) had denied an exemption for the township properties. County Attorney Chris Rohr said he would meet with Baumfalk to examine the matter further. Commissioners Mark Mosley and Lincoln Pochop said they believed the issue had been settled previously but agreed to revisit the records at a future meeting.
The board did not take formal action on the taxation question and directed staff to report back after reviewing the exemption history and BOTA decision. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 15, 2025; no date was set in the transcript for when the appraiser's review will be completed.
